Ooh, one more I missed - the Jams have a common, global Theme which is announced to each location at 6.30pm local time on the Friday (and kept secret from the rest of the world). The Jammers are requested, "don't dring a team, don't bring an idea. Let these happen at the Jam". So far the themes have been:

GSJ11 - Super(Heroes)
GSusJ11- Playgrounds
GSJ12 - Hidden Treasures

At the end, we have several hundred projects (prototypes) addressing that Theme. Here are 350 projects on "Hidden Treasures": http://planet.globalservicejam.org/gsj12/projects

Cheers

Hi there!
Thanks for writing about the Jam!
Just a slight correction which might help your readers find local events - the name of the event is "Global Service Jam" (no "design"), and the hashtag of the next edition is #gsj13.
But why wait until 2013? Our sister event the Global Sustainability Jam (same format, focus on sustainability, wider solution space including objects, initiatives, networks) will be "around October 2012". Check out www.globalsustainabilityjam.org for the latest news.
Thanks!

I'm glad you found the post interesting. You touched on one of the points made at the BL event - that we're actually relatively early on in the development of this technology, and as such we're in a phase of acceleration. Now we're starting to think a lot more about it's impact, and the rate of development may start to plateau, giving the majority more time to catch up and feel at ease. But saying that, there will always be amazing innovations that makes us feel like we're behind the times!

Thanks Brenna. You're not alone! It's a common issue in creative projects. The important thing is knowing when it's happening and making the choice as to what is essential, a 'nice to have', and possible within the time frame and resources. Looking forward to seeing the final website - it sounds exciting :-)

arggh, can't believe I've only just discovered your blog! great reads. This article makes me realise how our web developers must feel working with us, two total scope creepers!

very thought provoking. on an evolutionary level, we are still stumbling around in the dark trying to work out how to best utilise this new tool that's been invented. But at the same time it's scary to think how much change it has imposed on how we communicate at such an comparatively early stage after its inception! yikes.

I could not agree more with the rationale of this article. It infuriates me how email is still used as a collaborative tool even when working on major global projects with agencies and partners from around the world. Let's start using the new tools and keep email to what it is good at. One to one conversations not managing projects.
